FOR pregnant women who can not quit smoking significantly, you can increase your baby's lung function at birth by taking vitamin C every day.

This is the conclusion of a new study at Oregon Health and Science University Doernbecher Children's Hospital. "Smoking during pregnancy is known to affect the development of the baby's lungs are developing. This causes a decrease in lung function and increase the risk of asthma," said Cindy McEvoy, MD, MCR, a professor of pediatrics and neonatology.

"We found that the babies of pregnant women who smoked but drank 500 milligrams of vitamin C every day to increase lung function as measured about 48 hours after birth," he said.

In early studies, monitoring McEvoy 159 pregnant women who are unable to quit smoking. They were asked to drink vitamin C daily or a placebo at 22 weeks gestation until delivery. A group of women who did not smoke were also studied as the reference group.

The researchers measured lung function in all newborns 48 hours and found babies of smoking mothers who received vitamin C supplements increase lung function when compared with newborns of smoking mothers who received placebo.

"Making mothers to stop smoking during pregnancy should be a priority, but this study provides a potential way to help babies born to women too who can not quit smoking during pregnancy," said McEvoy. "Supplements of vitamin C may block some of the effects of smoking on fetal lung development."

He continued, "Our findings are important because lung function tests at birth is associated with the potential for wheezing and asthma in childhood." Vitamin C treatment is simple, safe, and inexpensive that can reduce the impact of smoking during pregnancy, "said McEvoy
